Seasons Greetings,

Have you noticed that Bali Echo is getting bigger? Once upon a time we ran at a 58 page maximum. But since starting 1997 with a 60-page new year edition, many of our editions over the past year have reached 64 pages.

The increase may sound trifling, but it has required considerable tinkering to ensure the quality of our content is maintained as the magazine grows. This has involved sacrificing some of our former columns in favour of new features. Regular pieces joining the magazine over the past year include the Home Grown profiles of local surf champions, and the Adventure pages which invite readers to experience the great Balinese outdoors. We also happen to be kicking into 1998 with something novel in store for readers. With the publication of Gde Aryantha Soethama's short story 'Kulkul', this edition includes the first of our pages devoted to new Balinese fiction in translation. Over the coming year we will also be adding pages to our Beyond Bali section, as we plan to expand its scope beyond the current focus on Lombok.

In response to our last edition, which incuded a feature on expatriates, Bali Echo received a flurry of letters. K. Susilawati's piece 'White Tribes' was both praised and cristcised by readers, sometimes both in the one sentence. "Both offensive and right on," wrote one resident ex-pat.

Your letters are important and appreciated. Thankyou, and Happy New Year!
