Dear Readers,

Every year, the Indonesian President announces an annual theme for the government's tourism campaign. This year, 1998, President Suharto has named The Year of Arts and Culture. It happens to be fitting then, that we dedicate the main feature in this edition of Bali Echo to a story on some of the independent initiatives to further contemporary art in Bali. As Putu Wirata and Jaye Wood show, the market for contemporary Balinese art is peaking both locally and internationally, thus allowing for the staging of some exciting shows and the establishment of some innovative spaces.

Also to look out for in this edition is Janet Prentice's story on the Togian Islands - bound to keep armchair travellers dreaming for a while, as well as a must for those who prefer the real thing. Melody Kemp goes to Amed and uncovers a secret that has certainly intrigued any frequent visitor to the sleepy seaside resort - the livelihood of the saltmakers whose little farms line the pot-holed Amed road. And surf legend Made Kasim tells Bali Echo of his action-packed life and times.

Just in case the magazine you are reading happens to belong to the hairdresser, and you can't seem to lay your hands on a copy before you leave the island, check out our new website when you get home (more information on Bali Update). It includes selected stories and complete advertiser information, and is renewed with each edition. Read on!
