Diving and surfing, however, are two important commodities in the tourism business in Bali. Many new dive
centers have appeared during the few years. They depend on, and at the same time are responsible for, the underwater habitat. Besides being well known for its, cultural. assets, Bali also holds a strong asset in nature, including the richness found under the water. Some areas are no longer of the pristine quality of years past because some of the lack of care with which they have been treated. Some of
them, however, including many that haven't yet been discovered, maintain their beauty.
The waters around Nusa Lembongan Island are one example that has been carefully guarded.
The three resorts on Nusa Lembongan Island, The Bali Hai Resort, Waka Nusa Resort and Nusa Lembongan Resort are actively working to keep the underwater habitat free from destruction. For example, Bali Hai Resort has a
program that has been developed to protect and maintain the coral reef ecosystem. They
organize environment education programs for people who live on Nusa Lembongan Island.
They also work together with any dive operators in Bali to formulate policies on ocean tourism services including Environmentally Friendly Diving Program. They are also involved actively in a government
program called Integrated Coastal Management. Apart from that, Bali Hai create fake coral reefs by placing a shipwreck or with Reef Balls, working together with The Reef Ball Foundation based in Woodstock, America.
The Coral Reef Monitoring
Program is a regular program in Nusa Lembongan. So far, the results of monitoring at the end of 1999, shows that the Coral Reef
Ecosystem around Nusa Lembongan Island in general, and around the Bali Hai pontoon in particular, has experienced growth.
The number of new polyps and the increase of plankton, guaranteeing the
establishment of the coral reef, all indicate
growth. NUSA
LEMBONGAN CLEANING BLITS In awareness of the urgency of protecting the environment, particularly in the tourism industry, Nusa Lembongan Resort, Bali Hai Cruises and Waka Nusa together with Bali Hai Beer, Ecolab and Coca-Cola arranged a Cleaning Blitz
Program in
early December last year.
The activity focussed on Sanghyang Bay, the long section of beach where the three
neighboring resorts operate. All employees of the three resorts attended the event, as well as many people from the village and also journalists who were invited to join in the
program and to record the environmental awareness event. These three resorts depend on nature as the biggest tourism, asset on Nusa Lembongan Island and are very aware of how important it is to establish the
environment. That's why the three resorts and all tourism industry people there are very sensitive of environmental issues. They take care to keep the island clean and to make sure that the guests feel comfortable as long as they stay on the island. In the coming years, this little-known tourism asset could be one of the most wanted destinations of the island of Bali. It can't be denied that the environment is the most important element of the tourism industry. According to the
organisers, the Cleaning Beach Program promoted by the three resorts has a "Back To Nature" concept, but was not only a cleaning program. More than that, the half-day activity has a bigger target: Cleaning Beach
Program was proposed to awaken the awareness of the public. Added to that, it also showed the excellent cooperation between the three resorts.
