RICE TERRACE COFFEE SHOP (PURI SAWAH)

Located on the bend just after the Water Palace, The Rice Terrace Coffee Shop at the Puri Sawah Homestay in Tirtagangga is much  more than just a Coffee Shop. The steep cobbled drive calls for Ist gear, but it's well worth it. The restaurant is simple and unpretentious with gingham tablecloths. With the sound of water running past and, the evening, the frogs' chorus, any tension easily flows away. There is one perfectly placed low level table at the back from which you can watch the birds and revel in the view up the terraced hill.

There is a set menu advertised on the blackboard on the road that includes Man Crumble. What a lure! Inside, the menu it is 'no fuss'. There are all sorts of home favourites and all are very reasonably priced. To drink we chose various juices, all of which also supported a straw unaided! After so deliberation, we opted to share portions of Guacamole, French Onion Rings and Garlic Bread, and particularly enjoyed the Onion Rings, which were lightly battered, crispy and hot. The Guacamole was zesty and fresh and good with the garlic bread, which could have done with a little more garlic butter.

Sharing a tuna. and pasta salad, we chose (more) Baked Stuffed Potatoes and the Pan Fried Cheese and Potato, but were sorely tempted by the Filled Crepes. We were not disappointed at all. The portions were home sized and the taste was homely too. Almost as stuffed as the potatoes, we managed one portion of the mango crumble with ice cream. It was divine. The mango flavour was immediate and the crumble - well, how do  you describe good crumble?

1bu Liz and her husband, Made, together with their 3 children, have succeeded in creating a home restaurant in  an enchanting location that makes an ideal lunch time stop en-route to Amed or Tulamben.

Amed is a revelation. About 3 hours drive from Denpasar, to the East of Mount Agung, the chain of fishing villages known collectively as Amed are cradled in individual black sand bays separated by rugged headlands. There are glorious views out over the sea, and on clear days you can see the outline of Mount Rinjani dominating Lombok. It is a true haven of calm where you can enjoy the fresh seafood, swim in calm waters, snorkel and really relax.
